Travel Scholarship Subsidy
ECA is committed to supporting the diversity of individuals and organisations working to strengthen the wellbeing of young children.
Our biennial national conference is an important sector development event that provides opportunities for networking, professional development and information sharing. We recognise that some individuals and organisations may find it difficult to participate in the conference because of limited resources and/or long travel distances. ECA would like to encourage organisations to take up a travel scholarship to promote participation and reduce barriers for delegates wishing to attend the 2016 National Conference—This is childhood ‘Pedagogy and practice in the early years’.
Conference subsidies can be used to pay a proportion of travel, accommodation or registration costs at the discretion of the individual or their employer.
ECA will be offering a single-rate subsidy regardless of location to 15 applicants. All suitable applicants will be eligible for $1000 (incl. GST) to attend the ECA National Conference 2016—This is Childhood ‘Pedagogy and practice in the early years’.
Adelaide Thinker in Residence 2012–2013 Professor Rinaldi is a world leader in education for children in the early years. She has been the President of Reggio Children since 2007 and is the first President of the Reggio Children-Loris Malaguzzi Centre Foundation. Carla is also a Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
Professor Rinaldi worked side-by-side with Loris Malaguzzi, the founder of the Reggio Emilia Approach, from 1970 until his death in 1994 in the municipal infant toddler and preschool system of Reggio Emilia, where Carla was the first pedagogical coordinator.
Claire Warden B.ED (Hons)
Claire is an international educational consultant working across Australia, Canada, USA and Europe. Claire is the founder of Living Classrooms Charity MD Mindstretchers Ltd.
Claire’s approach to nature kindergartens has earned her international recognition as a pioneer in educational thinking. Her respect for children and families runs through the Floorbook approach that is used within nature pedagogy to incorporate children’s voices into intentional teaching. Claire Warden is one of the world’s leading consultants and writers on the use of consultative methods in education.
Associate Professor Susan Edwards
Susan Edwards is Associate Professor in Early Childhood Education at the Australian Catholic University, Learning Sciences Institute of Australia. Her research investigates the role of play-based learning in the early childhood curriculum.
Associate Professor Edwards has completed work as a lead Chief Investigator on an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant (2009–2012) titled ‘Examining play-based approaches to teaching and learning in early childhood education and care’. She is currently working as a Chief Investigator on two new Australian Research Council Discovery Grants (2014–2016; 2015–2017) investigating the role of play-based pedagogies in the provision of obesity and sustainability education in early childhood. Susan is also leading a project examining the use of digital technologies in the early years.
Jill McLachlan is an early childhood educator and leader, currently working at Northern Beaches Christian School, a K–12 school in Terrey Hills, Sydney. Jill works there as both a Stage 1 classroom teacher and as the K–2 Community Leader. Since beginning teaching Jill has been exploring the role of pedagogical documentation as a research and advocacy tool in schools and considering the role of the teacher as co-researcher with children. Of particular interest has been the way in which pedagogical documentation enables teachers to walk alongside children, listen to them, celebrate their voices and leave a trace of their thinking and theories.

A range of centre tours have been planned for delegates. Tours will depart from the Darwin Convention Centre. Tours will cost between $85–$200 per person, including transport and experienced guides. The four centre tours will guide delegates to a selection of Darwin’s early childhood education and care centres, including:

Tour 2: Family day care in action (Darwin Family Day Care, Let’s Play Outdoors and Kentish Lifelong Learning and Care: Integrated Play)
Tour 3: Top End long day care in action (Murraya Children’s Centre: Many children, four ducks, three chickens, two cats and a rabbit and La Crèche: Dream Come True Tour—‘La Crèche on the Avenue’)
Tour 4: Sustainability in action (Berry Springs Preschool and Territory Wild Life Park)

HESTA Early Childhood Education and Care Gala Awards dinner
The HESTA Early Childhood Education and Care Awards recognise outstanding early childhood education and care professionals. The awards dinner is optional and available at an extra cost for all delegates, partners and guests. It will be a night of celebration and dancing! Ticket cost includes dinner, drinks and entertainment. Please purchase tickets during the online registration process.

Mindil Sunset Beach Markets
This is an optional social activity for delegates. As the sun dips into the Arafura Sea every Thursday and Sunday evening, most of Darwin descends on Mindil Beach; tables, chairs, rugs and eskies in tow. Food is the main attraction. Colourful arts and crafts vendors peddle their wares. Shop till you drop, catch a fire show, stop for a massage or be entertained by buskers, bands and talented performers as you wind your way through the palm lined boulevards.
There will be no branch drinks for 2016, however we will offer a bus transfer from the Darwin Convention Centre (DCC) to the Mindil Sunset Beach Markets (return). The ticket excludes any meals and beverages. You are more than welcome to make your own arrangements.

Australasian Journal of Early Childhood (AJEC) Research Symposium, 5 October 2016
‘Whose knowledge is it anyway? Pushing the evidence base in early childhood research’
The AJEC Research Symposium is scheduled the day before the conference and all interested participants are encouraged to attend for opportunities to share innovative research methodologies, findings and research with cutting edge partnerships and collaborations.
The research symposium will be interactive and includes:
an invited panel of researchers who will offer provocations for researchers and interested stakeholders to discuss and question the theme
round tables of three research papers per session for sharing, discussing and debating research evidence, theoretical perspectives and methods
a Q&A forum to bring together the diversity of discussion and to develop a directed action agenda for research in Australasia.
We welcome participants including postgraduate students, academics, researchers and practitioners at all levels from around the world to come together to share cutting-edge knowledge and forge research networks in Australasia and beyond. For more information on the symposium, please click here.

You will be given the opportunity to secure a reservation booking during the conference registration process. We strongly suggest you take advantage of this opportunity as the special rates are only available for a limited time.

ECA understands that exhibiting at the conference is prohibitive for some organisations. We recognise that some organisations may find it difficult to participate in the conference because of limited resources and/or long travel distances. To provide an opportunity and reduce barriers to participate at the 2016 Conference, ECA is offering a small number of subsidised exhibition booths, sponsored by Early Childhood Australia, to support organisations that otherwise would not be able to exhibit at the ECA Conference.
